Make A Pinata With Newspaper and Tubes

Love this project! My good friend June Rubin in San Diego CA did this project with her Pinata Making Class at the Tierrasanta Recreation Center. The class was all girls.

It is a great recycled art project using old newspapers and paper towel rolls to make the forms.

Ole!

Tools needed for this hat project (above)

• Bowls
• Newsapers
• Paper Tubes (paper towels, toilet paper, oatmeal boxes)
• Glue
• Filling (candy, toys, etc)
• String

Directions:

• Decide on a form (Ie: Donkey, dog, etc)
• Construct the Pinata Form using tubes and or boxes
• Fill the boxes with fillings
• Paste the newspaper over the constructed form to mold the shape
• Add a heavy string or twine to the center hang it from (Best wrapped around the center body)
• Cut colored tissue in strips approx 5 inches wide
  and then cut 3/4 inch sections about 3.5 inches (leaving approx 1/2 inch uncut on each 4 inch strip) (see diagram)
• Cover the final shape in tissue paper strips
  Overlapping every 1/2 inch or so
• Glue only the top 1/2 inch (see diagram)
• Add eyes-newsprint will work)

Notes:

• You could use small boxes (such as toasties etc) in place of tubes
• Save tissure paper from gifts to make this a 100% recycle craft!
  
• You can add two strings if that makes it easier to hang
  

Options / Ideas:

• Great kids party project--If it's a lego party make lego shaped pinata. A Pirate Party make a treasure chest. Etc.
• Make an Earth Pinata for Earth Day using a balloon or Ball.
